10 best whisky gifts for Christmas this year

Give the gift of whisky this Christmas with a snifter from Speyside or Japan!
Ensure a a friend or relative celebrates Christmas with a dram from near and distant shores.

Christmas is fast approaching. So here's the perfect opportunity to try a new dram. We've pulled together the best Scotch whisky and Japanese whiskies.

Remember, a good whisky present is savoured for life, not just Christmas.

1. Glenrothes Vintage Reserve; £40.00

A combination of casks from ten different vintages of Glenrothes. It makes for a mellow whisky with soft fruits, citrus notes and honey. More importantly, buying a bottle of this whisky automatically enters you into a prize draw where the top prize is a bottle of whisky worth £350.

2. Wolfburn Aurora Sherry Oak Whisky; £48.00

One of the earliest releases from Wolfburn Distillery in Thurso, Caithness. It is 100% sherry cask matured.

On the nose you'll sense sherry sweetness accompanied by dried fruits and malt. On the palate there's a warmth imparted from from the sherry cask, augmented by Autumn fruits and nutty flavours, with a hint of spice in the background - wonderfully smooth and mellow. This really is a first class whisky.

3. Ardbeg Corryvreckan; £65.00

Heady, intense and powerful on the nose, Ardbeg Corryvreckan is peppery and chewy with notes of espresso and cherries with a smoky, tarry finish. Non chill filtered and bottled at 57% abv to retain maximum flavour.

4. Hibiki Japanese Harmony: £48.00

This blended Japanese whisky uses grain spirits from Chita, Hakushu and Yamazaki to produce an unintimidating whisky rich in candied peel and honey flavours. That unusual 24-sided bottle represents Japan’s seasons, if you were wondering.

5. Nikka From The Barrel; £40.00

A powerful, rich yet elegant cask strength blended whisky from Nikka. One of the best blended whiskies available anywhere in the world in our humble opinion.

6. Lagavulin 12 Year Old 2015; £85.00

A yearly limited edition cask strength Lagavulin. This has become a firm favourite here at Whisky Fix for its uncompromising style. It really is a no holds barred Lagavulin!

7. Benromach Hermitage Wood Finish; £40.00

This whisky is matured in first fill bourbon casks and is finished for 31 months in hand selected casks from the Hermitage appellation d'origine Controlee, in the northern Rhone region of France.

9. Springbank 15 Year Old Whisky; £60.00

This iconic 15 year old Springbank has been fully matured in ex-sherry casks from Spain. The difficulty in sourcing enough quality sherry casks means only a small amount of this is bottled every year.

10. Oban Little Bay; £55.00

A welcome addition to the core range of whiskies that Oban has to offer. Oban Little Bay is made up from a mixture small batch bourbon and sherry casks before being finished in smaller 'quarter' casks.

Verdict

If you are looking for an occasion whisky, or something to impress your guests with, try the Springbank 15 year old, it's a great dram. If it’s a bargain you are after, you can do much worse than the Glenrothes Vintage Reserve (with the added bonus of entering prize draw to win a bottle of Glenrothes 1988 Vintage, worth £350.00)
